How to Read the Bible
"Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 118:105)
(1) READ IMAGINATIVELY. Picture the biblical situation as vividly as possible. A Bible dictionary, commentary, and one or more modern translations of the Bible will be helpful to you.
(2) READ THOUGHTFULLY. Ask the Lord what He is trying to teach you to believe, to be and to do. Only those who love God and have love in their hearts for others will truly understand what they read in God's Word.
(3) READ EXPECTANTLY. Expect to be rebuked as well as reassured. Expect to receive guidance and inspiration to live a more Christ-like life. Expect God not only to inform you but also to transform you. Thank God for speaking to your needs.
(4) READ REGULARLY. Regardless of your time or feelings, read your Bible daily. Have a definite place and plan for your Bible reading. The Bible is daily food meant for your daily needs.
Reading the Word of God will lead you to God. "Plant yourself in the Word of God day and night. Allow it to work on your root system, so whatever you do, it will prosper" (from "Nuggets for the Soul").
“…thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success" (Joshua 1:8)
